My AC Won’t Turn On!

Binsky Trucks
At Binsky Home, a common call we get from Hillsborough homeowners is, “My air conditioner won’t turn on. Help!” So it was no surprise when Mr. Del P., a homeowner in Hillsborough, called with this exact problem. We dispatched one of our technicians, Kenny, who arrived within the hour. He started with a full system diagnostic, which means he’s trying to find the root problem based on the symptoms he notices. It’s kind of like doing detective work but for fixing air conditioners.During the inspection of the outdoor unit (the condenser), Kenny noticed the capacitor was in bad shape.

Here’s why a bad capacitor can cause an AC to not turn on.

Air conditioner capacitor: A quick explanation

In order for your air conditioner’s various motors to start, they need a quick jolt of electricity.

This jolt comes from the capacitor, a battery that releases electricity to help start an electric motor.

In this case, Del’s capacitor was worn out and therefore his AC’s motors couldn’t get started.

You may also have this problem if you hear strange noises coming from the outside unit. That noise is the motors struggling to turn on without the capacitor’s help.

The solution: Replace the capacitor

Kenny took note of this issue and created a written proposal to have it replaced. Del agreed to the job and Kenny replaced it that day.

In the end, Del got his AC up and running back and was happy that the job got done so quickly—the same day he called!

Note: Keep in mind that the cost and time to fix a central air conditioner depends on what’s wrong with it.

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach. If your air conditioner is having issues, the first step is always to have a professional diagnose what’s wrong.

It’s just like how a doctor asks questions and diagnoses what’s wrong with you before recommending a course of treatment to remedy the problem.
