EV Charger Levels

Charging up a gas-powered vehicle is easy, but charging an EV is a bit more complicated than filling your tank with gas and hitting the road.

When it comes to EV chargers, there are three different kinds of chargers or levels fit for different things.

  • Level 1: Level 1 chargers plug into common household outlets. These chargers charge slowly & are best only for plug-in hybrids. It can take 50+ hours to charge a BEV from empty to 80% using a Level 1 charger.
  • Level 2: These systems run on higher voltages, giving them enough power to fill your “tank” overnight. Level 2 chargers can fill a BEV from empty to 80% in about four to 10 hours, making them perfect for charging your EV at home.
  • Level 3: Level 3 chargers use direct current instead of alternating current like Level 1 and 2 models use. Level 3 chargers are up to 15 times faster than Level 2 chargers. These systems can charge a BEV from empty to 80% in 20 to 60 minutes, making them perfect for charging your EV quickly. Though these are very expensive & aren’t typically used for charging at home.

Professional EV Charger Installation

When considering an EV charger installation, there are a few factors to consider:

  • Type: There are three types or levels of chargers, with level 2 being the most common for at-home EV charging stations.
  • Location: Your charger should be located where you’ll easily access it while remaining compliant with regulations and codes.
  • Mobility: Do you want to charge your car in multiple locations around your home, or will a fixed location work for you?
  • Capacity: Older homes may require an electrical panel upgrade to power your EV charger properly and safely.

Our team can help you determine the best setup for your needs and budget.

4 Advantages of Installation of an EV Charger

  • Cost-effective: You’ll not only save money due to no longer needing to buy gas, but you’ll also save on public charging stations.
  • Convenience: There’s nothing more convenient than allowing your vehicle to charge overnight, ensuring it’s ready to go for the next day.
  • Reliability: When you have a charging station at home, you know it will work properly and be available when needed.

FAQs

An EV charger takes up little space within a home. You’ll need a wall with an electrical panel to mount the EV charging box, which will connect to the hose that will charge your vehicle.

Installing your own EV charger is unsafe, as they often require high-voltage wiring. It’s best to trust professionals like those at Binsky Home Service.

Level 1 uses a standard 120-volt outlet, charging at 2 to 5 miles of range per hour. Level 2 uses a 240-volt outlet with a rate of 10 to 60 miles of ranger per hour. Level 3, used only for commercial purposes, uses high-voltage direct current for a rate of up to 90 miles of range in a half-hour.

Tesla EVs come with a Mobile Connector that can be turned into a powerful Level 2 charger with an adaptor, an option most other EVs don’t offer. However, if you don’t own a Tesla EV, it’s probably not worth it. The brand isn’t as important as your energy needs and which style of charging is best for you.
